Project

Rip currents are highly dynamic and unstable seaward-directed water flows of the nearshore circulation system and the primary physical hazard for recreational beach users worldwide. Their importance for beach safety is well recognised by coastal scientists, beach managers and lifeguards worldwide, but their dynamics remain poorly understood on many non-tidal environments where they display a pronounced variability in current intensity, with scarce studies in the Black Sea and no information on the Romanian coast.

Project objectives are:

  • Analysis of rip current typology and behavior along the Southern Romanian Black Sea beaches
  • Monitoring of rip currents dynamics over different time scales (from minutes to days)
  • Numerical modelling of rip currents dynamics
  • Rip currents risk perception assessment and implications for beach safety
